Australian website numbers explode

By AAP January 18, 2012 7:14AM Source

AUSTRALIA is in the midst of a .au boom, with more than 60,000 .au sites being registered monthly and local websites contributing $475 million to the domestic economy.

The report, by Deloitte Access Economics, says the the number of websites with .au domain names (including .net.au, .com.au and .org.au) has rocketed since 2005.

More than 85 per cent of the more than 2.18 million .au websites in existence are .com.au sites, denoting mostly business use.

In 2002 there were fewer than 500,000 .au websites registered.

Deloitte found .au websites contributed $475 million to the domestic economy in 2011 and created 4300 full-time jobs.

One theory for the growth is that consumers liked to buy from Australian-registered websites, the report found.

Chris Disspain, CEO of .au Domain Administration (auDA), the industry administrator and watchdog that co-commissioned the study, said .au was also viewed as trustworthy.

"The safeguards we have in place to protect both Australian businesses and end users, make .au a signpost of trust and security online," he said.
